British Museum
Overview
The first national public museum in the world, free since its founding act of 1753. Its eight million objects document human history: the Rosetta Stone, Parthenon sculptures, Assyrian lions of Nineveh, Sutton Hoo helmet, and Egyptian mummies. Sir Hans Sloane's collection of 71,000 items seeded it all.
