National Museum of African American History and Culture
Overview
The Smithsonian museum opened on the National Mall in 2016, a century after Black Civil War veterans first proposed a national memorial. David Adjaye's tiered bronze-colored corona echoes Yoruba crowns. Exhibits rise from the slave trade through Reconstruction, segregation and civil rights to contemporary culture, including Harriet Tubman's hymnal and Chuck Berry's red Cadillac.
