National Portrait Gallery London
Overview
The first national portrait gallery in the world, founded in 1856 to collect likenesses of famous Britons rather than great paintings for their own sake. Its first acquisition was the Chandos portrait, thought to show William Shakespeare. The collection runs from Tudor monarchs to living celebrities in paint, photography and sculpture. It reopened in 2023 after a major redevelopment beside Trafalgar Square.
