Whitney Museum of American Art
Overview
Founded by sculptor and patron Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney after the Met declined her gift of works by living American artists. It champions American art of the 20th and 21st centuries and holds the largest collection of Edward Hopper's work, much of it bequeathed by his widow Josephine. Its Biennial is the leading survey of contemporary American art. Since 2015 it has occupied a Renzo Piano building at the foot of the High Line.
