Overview
Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, the national museum, opened on Wellington's waterfront in 1998, merging the former national museum and national art gallery. Its Maori name means roughly 'container of treasures'. It presents Maori and Pacific taonga alongside New Zealand art and natural history, including a rare preserved colossal squid.
